Fit-for-purpose DMA process

Creating a double materiality assessment (DMA) process is not a one-size-fits-all exercise.  Our advice? Design a process that’s flexible enough to evolve with your company. Your industry, team maturity, data capabilities, and impact areas are unique, so let your process capture where you stand in its evolution.

No universal process
Your DMA should capture the knowledge of your experts—even if it means starting with small steps. Avoid over-complexity if your team isn’t ready for it yet, and be mindful of any blind spots or knowledge gaps you identify along the way. Use external subject-matter experts and data points when these inputs help your company make relevant decisions.

Set clear intentions from the start
Before you set up your process, consider the key questions your DMA should answer and how these insights will guide your business strategy and evaluate your business models. This intentional approach ensures your DMA becomes a valuable asset in shaping your business direction.

Build for the long haul
Create a DMA platform that is comparable over time and across assessments. Involve your CFO and risk management team to set realistic thresholds and align with other strategic tools. By weaving a “red thread,” your DMA will become more cohesive and integrated into other processes.

Welcome the learning curve
The first assessment might feel a bit subjective, and that’s okay! Each iteration will improve as you close data gaps and refine your methodology. Lay the groundwork now, and define what “better” looks like as you grow.
